Revisions to the original plan:

It is quite hard to strictly follow a plan that you make at the beginning of a project as you don't know what hurdles you will encounter throughout the project. Obviously, when I originally made my plan/timetable for the project I didn't consider that the college would shut down due to the current pandemic. I will have to make constant revisions to my plan to adapt to the current situation.

The main thing I need to plan is alternative software that I can use at home in place of the Adobe Creative Cloud. I have found some alternatives that I could use.

Pixlr as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop CC 2018:
https://pixlr.com/

NCH VideoPad as an alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018:

WavePad as an alternative to Adobe Audition CC 2018:

Audacity as an alternative to Abobe Audition CC 2018:

Open Shot as an alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018:8

Trello Board:

In terms of on-going progress within my planning, I will be updating and reflecting on my Trello board (https://trello.com/b/QLRLULlM/fmp) weekly and commenting on it in the planning part of my blog. The picture above is what is on my Trello board so far. I have only just made it and I prefer handwriting a plan as I feel it sticks in my head more and I stick to the plan more. However, I will definitely be using Trello for websites as it is really easy to drag and drop the websites in and keep a record of them.

UAL Level 3 Multimedia - Final Major Project Trip:

I have chosen to go to the Soul Proprietors Record Shop in Brixton as they specialise in Soul and Rhythm and Blues Records. I am hoping that by going to a record shop that sells the genre I am focusing on, the staff will be passionate and knowledgeable and will be able to give me information and background on the genre which could add context to my FMP.

Travel Plans:

Meet at Colindale Station at 11AM and take the Northern Line to Euston. Change and change the Victoria Line to Brixton. From Brixton station, it is around a 20-minute walk to the music shop.

Location Details:

Soul Proprietors Record Shop
64 Elm Park
Brixton, London
SW2 2UB
UK
Thurs:11AM- 7PM

Things to bring:

Camera or phone to take photos
Possibly a microphone and recorder if I decide to record Vox Pops
Pen and paper for any notes
Oyster card for travel
Suitable walking shoes and clothing
Umbrella

Plan:

This is the main plan I have made so far. I find it easier to make handwritten plans as they work better for me. I have planned out what I need to research as well as what I can do to make sure I can still produce a relatively good product through COVID-19.

Documentary plan:

I want to produce a documentary that not only informs and educates but also entertains.

I want to start my documentary with some establishing shots of a recording studio. Establishing shots are really helpful to indicate either where the documentary is set or what it is about. Ideally, I would have been able to film these shots myself in a recording studio I use regularly but due to Covid-19 I am unable to get to the studio, so I have found some b-roll shots that I can use in place of that.

I have found some good quality, copyright-free R&B instrumentals that I could use for my score. I have also been given permission to use the music by some of my interviewees. Two of them are in the music industry and have music out available on all major streaming platforms. This means that I am less restricted in terms of the music I decide to use.

Getting interviews will be quite difficult, as I had originally set out to film all the interviews myself and use professional equipment and film the studio. Obviously, that is no longer feasible so I have had to figure out a way to still get the interviews from the people I need them from without filming myself. Personally, as someone who likes to have creative control over production, this has been quite difficult for me. I have so far managed to get in contact with both people within the industry for an expert opinion and people who just enjoy the genre. They have filmed their interviews and sent them to me. I am still waiting for one to come through. They are not what I had originally planned but they are still good and once edited I think could still have a good enough effect/ impact.

I think I am going to follow a similar format to the last documentary I produced. I don’t want to mimic it but that format worked and as I have already produced a documentary with that layout, I know how to do it and will make it easier for me.

Overall, I am both excited and nervous to start production. I am excited as I love the topic and really want to produce a documentary that will reflect the beauty of the R&B genre, however, I am nervous as I have limited resources at home and the quality may not be as good as it could have been but hopefully the combination of my passion for the topic and my past work will talk for themselves.

Documentary storyboard:
I made a really simple storyboard just to further support my documentary plan but to also give me rough guidance when I start production. It is good to have something to refer back to even if it is simple just to ensure I stay on track and try to produce the documentary I set out and intended to make.
