Reflective Log
Week commencing 02/03/2020:
This week I started research for my FMP. So far I think research is going well. I need to make sure that I do research on everything and by that I mean not just R&B music but documentaries and distribution as well. I also made and presented my Pecha Kucha. Overall, I think my Pechakucha went really well. I had solid points to explain why I have chosen my topic. I think the feedback was also very helpful. My main feedback was that I explained my products clearly and had good knowledge of my topic. However, a lot of the feedback said that it was repetitive that could be down to being nervous when presenting, but could also reflect some of my initial ideas. So I will need to bear this in mind during production to avoid repetition. So far I think I am on track, I need to start doing a lot more research to be as prepared as possible for production.
Week commencing 09/03/2020:
This week I planned my trip to Central London for my FMP. I have chosen to go to the Soul Proprietors Record Shop in Brixton as they specialise in Soul and Rhythm and Blues Records. I am hoping that by going to a record shop that sells the genre I am focusing on, the staff will be passionate and knowledgeable and will be able to give me information and background on the genre which could add context to my FMP. By the end of the week, I am hoping to have finished my proposal, Pecha Kucha writes up and developed my research further. Research is an ongoing task but the majority will take place at the start of this unit so I need to make sure I keep on top of it.
Week commencing 23/03/2020:
This week I have tried to plan as best as possible. Due to the current pandemic, I have tried my best to stay on track and still complete my work to the best of my ability. As FMP is a very independent unit, there will be elements of my blog that won't be affected. However, I think production will encounter new hurdles I have not had to overcome before. I am going to have to take it one day at a time but hopefully, I can complete my FMP and it reflects all the work I have put into it.
Week commencing 30/03/2020:
This week I further planned out and executed what I needed to research to help produce my documentary. Honestly, I am finding it really hard to stay on track and stick to a schedule as I am used to producing something in college and having college resources to help me. I also researched online museums and record stores as I couldn't go and visit another record store. I am really going to have to focus on research, planning and experimentation to support me. I need to prove that I am worthy of the distinction that I want even if my final products don't solely reflect that due to the lack of resources because of COVID-19.
Week commencing 06/04/2020:
This week I have started researching score for my documentary. I have found a few R&B style instrumentals that I really like that are free to use. I still want to research some more but the few options I have so far can be found in skills development and experimentation. I have also experimented with some Adobe software which can be found in the same section of the blog. Next, I want to start gathering B-Roll and make a compilation of what I find. Not only does this help me with the production of my video but also helps me practice and remember my way around Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018 before I start final production.
Week commencing 13/04/2020:
This week I made a compilation on Premiere Pro of B-Roll footage which can be found in skills development and experimentation. It was quite difficult to find B-Roll on the topic so I just used it as an opportunity to gather footage of older R&B artists compared to R&B now. I am sure there is still a lot more footage that I can add to final production but as a first attempt, it was ok. It was also a really good opportunity to brush up on my Premiere Pro editing skills and refresh my memory before I start final production.
Week commencing 20/04/2020:
This week I gathered all the results from my Google forms questionnaire that I carried out. The questionnaire alongside the results can be found in Research and Contextual Analysis. The general consensus was that most people would be interested in an R&B documentary. There was a fairly equal division between the audience wanting to see an informative or creative documentary. We these results I think I am going to produce a documentary that is creative enough to reflect the topic and genre of music in question but is also informative enough that it educates my audience. I think this questionnaire, although short, was exactly what I needed to confirm my final plans for final production. I am eager to start now and hopefully produce a documentary that takes all this data, using it to the best of my ability, and produce a really good final product. I am really happy with the results and the data gathered will be invaluable for when I start final production.
Week commencing 27/04/2020:
This week honestly I haven't made much progress from last week. I started planning out my documentary but I am struggling to actually start production. Due to the current pandemic, I have been struggling to gather interviews. I originally set out to film a Vox Pop and record my interviews in the studio with professional equipment. I have got my own camera and would have been able to film on that but as we can't visit people, I have had to compromise the quality of the video and sound in the interest of the documentary as I got people both in the industry and people who just have an interest in R&B music. Hopefully, I can get into production ASAP.
Week commencing 04/05/2020:
This week I updated my planning and added my documentary plan and a storyboard. My documentary plan was just there to guide my production process and to map out how I was going to execute my production. I made a really simple storyboard just to further support my documentary plan but to also give me rough guidance when I start production. It is good to have something to refer back to even if it is simple just to ensure I stay on track and try to produce the documentary I set out and intended to make. I also made a start on my production. I am happy with how it is looking so far and really hope it turns out how I intended.
Week commencing 11/05/2020:
This week I continued with the production of my documentary. I am about halfway through production and I wanted my documentary to reflect everything I have learnt whilst being in lockdown. I spent about two days learning how to make a credits reel to add into the end of my documentary. I am really proud of how it turned out as a first attempt and I am very excited to add my final reel to the end of my documentary. I am really happy that I managed to teach myself a new skill and it paid off enough that I am able to add it into my final production. I am happy with how it is looking so far and really hope it turns out how I want it to.
Week commencing 18/05/2020:
This week I continued with the production of my documentary. I would say I am about 3/4 of the way through. I have planned to have my documentary finished by the end of May. I always like to be finished quite a bit before the deadline so I have time to look over my final products, correct any mistakes and not feel under any pressure. I should hopefully be finished by the end of next week which allows me time to perfect it. I am happy with how it looks so far and I don't think it is too far off what I had originally planned to do if we were not in quarantine. If I am done by the end of next week, I want to start my evaluation, the write-ups for my final products and do a read through my blog to make sure everything is there.
Week commencing 01/06/2020:
This week I finished all of my final products and my evaluation and managed to upload it all to my blog. I am happy with how my final products turned out and I feel I did the best I possibly could with the difficult circumstances. I am also really happy that I managed to get everything finished a week before the deadline date. This is something I normally do but didn't think was achievable so I am really glad I managed to do it.
